Getting Under Our Own Skin: Fascia, Interoception, & Social-Emotional Health

April 23, 2022

All-Day Virtual Training with 7-Day Access to Download the Recordings

This course combines science and psychology with an emphasis on practice. We’ll explore our web of connective tissue as the foundation for therapeutic work tailored to a variety of physical and emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and PTSD.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Over the last decade, science has shed new light on the factors that lead to well-being, but some of the most important insights haven’t yet reached mainstream understanding.

Until recently, neuroplasticity was considered the primary method of learning through practice. Yet emerging research credits bioplasticity (body-based neuroplasticity) with mental, emotional, and social change.

One of the most powerful methods of accessing bioplasticity is through connective tissue. This is because of the central role it plays in interoception, our awareness of the inner state of our bodies.

The world of living tissue underneath our skin moves continually in a symphony of “intelligent chaos.” In much the same way, our field of sensory awareness fluctuates from moment to moment and gives rise to our personal and social emotions.

The ability to be present with changing bodily sensations trickles up to the brain- no translation required- where it scaffolds our ability to be present with emotional and social stressors. This makes attention to bodily sensation (interoception) and to our connective tissue (a substrate for interoception) a valuable training ground for nervous system resilience, emotional balance, self-awareness, and self-regulation.

Interoception influences a wide array of sensations, from temperature to pain to emotions. Emerging research also links connective tissue and interoception with inflammation and depression. This opens a door to new therapies for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, eating disorders, and more.

How can we apply this research to our own lives? What elements help maximize its therapeutic impact? And how can we seamlessly and safely offer this tool to others?

In this daylong workshop, we’ll explore the research that links these elements together. We’ll take a deep dive into the practical aspects of connective tissue release work, including:

  • The specific elements that make connective tissue interventions more therapeutic
  • How to target connective tissue interventions to interoceptive (rather than solely proprioceptive) awareness
  • The importance of refining auditory cues for connective tissue work (and why)
  • How to use connective tissue interventions to maximize body agency and body ownership
  • How to language connective tissue interventions in a trauma-informed way
  • The relationship between connective tissue inflammation, depression, and PTSD
  • Sequences (and adjustments) that support people with depression, anxiety, inflammation, and chronic pain
  • Connective tissue’s link to our autonomic nervous system, and what vagal tone really means
  • Methods to sequence connective tissue self-massage into personal practice or yoga classes

This course will touch on some of the research insights from February’s Masterclass, but its deeper focus will be the practical, step-by-step methods for integrating connective tissue self-bodywork into your personal practice or teaching.

You’ll receive

  • Access to download the workshop recordings for a period of 7 (seven) days so you can keep and review them forever
  • A copy of the workshop PowerPoint
  • A CE certificate for yoga teachers through Yoga Alliance

Materials will be sent out by end of day on Monday, April 25th. The recording will be available until Monday, May 2, 2022.

Getting Under Our Own Skin: Fascia, Interoception, & Social-Emotional Health

April 23, 2022

All-Day Virtual Gathering with 7-Day Access to Download the Recordings

This course combines social, affective, and neuroscience with psychology and embodied practices culled from the traditions of yoga and mindfulness to the study of how we create lasting change through the lens of today’s rapidly changing and challenging world.

Getting Under Our Own Skin: Fascia, Interoception, & Social-Emotional Health

Over the last decade, science has shed new light on the factors that lead to well-being, but some of the most important insights haven’t yet reached mainstream understanding.

Until recently, neuroplasticity was considered the primary method of learning through practice. However, emerging research credits bioplasticity (body-based neuroplasticity) with mental, emotional, and social change. And one of the most powerful methods of accessing our capacity for transformative change is through our connective tissue.

Perhaps the most compelling role of connective tissue is the one it plays in interoception, our awareness of the inner state of our bodies.

The world of living tissue underneath our skin moves continually in a symphony of “intelligent chaos.” In much the same way, our field of sensory awareness fluctuates from moment to moment and gives rise to our personal and social emotions.

In this daylong workshop, we’ll explore the research that links these elements together. We’ll take a deep dive into the practical aspects of connective tissue release work, including:

  • What connective tissue health is, and how it relates to depression, inflammation, and chronic pain
  • Connective tissue’s link to our autonomic nervous system, and what vagal tone really means
  • Implications of connective tissue inflammation for mood disorders such as depression, and for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • The relationship between connective tissue and interoception
  • How to target connective tissue interventions to interoceptive (rather than solely proprioceptive) awareness’
  • The importance of refining auditory cues for connective tissue work (and why)
  • How to utilize connective tissue interventions to maximize body agency and body ownership for maximum well-being
  • The specific elements that make connective tissue interventions therapeutic
  • How to language connective tissue interventions in a trauma-informed and therapeutic way
  • Methods to effectively sequence connective tissue self-massage into dynamic rest interludes, personal practice, and yoga classes

This course builds on our two-hour Masterclass from February of 2022, and offers the practical, step-by-step methods for integrating connective tissue self-bodywork into your personal practice or teaching.

Throughout our time together, I’ll integrate cutting-edge research from science, psychology, and other fields of study with detailed instruction for practice, prescriptions for well-being, and implications for the urgent problem of suffering.

You’ll receive a copy of the workshop PowerPoint, a CE certificate for yoga teachers through Yoga Alliance, and a link to download all the materials for a period of seven days (so you can keep and review them forever).
